Useful information on the material and its potential uses
The precision required for machines, equipment, and components is always increasing and demands an innovative and meticulous choice of materials. For this, design engineers often have to go into uncharted territory. Granite is not often considered as a material for components, sometimes it’s even rejected.
This requires a change in thinking. Many traditional materials – such as steel construction, cast iron, plastics, light metals and combinations thereof – quickly show their limits in regard to thermal expansion, stiffness, abrasion resistance and vibration damping. In these cases, natural granite impresses with the highest precision possible.
Granite, which formed millions of years ago under the earth’s crust and exists today almost completely free of tension in its natural form, has become an exciting material to work on in all its manifestations and is also ideal for special purpose engineering.
There are almost no limits to the shape it can take. Even complex forms can be produced by sawing, grinding, drilling, milling, water jet cutting and adhesive bonding. Machine bases and components for a variety of application areas are created by, for example, the assembly of threaded inserts and linear guides.
Natural granite is an innovative construction material and has many advantages:
