It is not always possible to avoid specialist terminology – particularly when it comes to technically complex topics like mechanical engineering. The following, alphabetically sorted glossary offers quick assistance if there is a term you do not understand.
The German National Accreditation Body (Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle, DAkkS) is a private sector organization that carries out the role of the national accreditation body for the Federal Republic of Germany. Our calibration laboratory is certified according to DAkkS
Granite is a magma-like plutonic rock (plutonite). It contains quartz and feldspar as well as dark (mafic) minerals, primarily glimmer. The chemical and mineralogical composition of granite corresponds to the volcanic rhyolite.
Lapping is an exciting mechanical, potentially also manually conducted manufacturing process to smooth surfaces. Lapping uses a mix of lap powder and water or oil. In contrast to polishing, in which the abrasive grain is embedded, work is conducted with loose grains. As a result, even with relatively coarse grains, it is possible to achieve high surface qualities because of the limited amount of material.
A linear guide is a guide equipped with rolling elements or slide bearings. A type of construction often applied in such a machine element is the draw-back of the rolling elements (recirculation).
Additional information on linear guides.
A composite material, developed by PLANOLITH and patented, from natural hard stone and ceramic which, through a special adhesive technology, is permanently and workably attached. The material has a high level of hardness and service life as well as a limited roughness and does not absorb any water.
Granite in its diverse manifestations and compositions, formed millions of years ago under the Earth’s crust, where magma slowly solidified. The magma was located under the Earth’s surface at a depth of over 2 kilometers. For this reason, granite is considered an alkaline abyssal rock. Its technical term is “PLUTONIC ROCK”.
